Hallstatt is one of the most photographed places in Austria – and at midday in high season, it feels exactly like that. Our honest advice to guests: visit Hallstatt, but don’t sleep there. Bad Goisern is about 8 kilometres away, quiet, spacious, and won’t cost you your nerves over parking.

Why Bad Goisern is the better base

Hallstatt is a World Heritage village with the visitor numbers to match: the centre is largely car-free, the paid car parks sit at the edge of the village and are often full by midday. Accommodation in the village is small, in demand and priced accordingly.

Bad Goisern at Lake Hallstatt is the opposite: a living market town with shops, cafés and a thermal spa – and from there it’s about 10 minutes to Hallstatt, 10 kilometres to Bad Ischl and 18 kilometres to St. Wolfgang. Everything within reach, without living in the middle of the excursion traffic.

The perfect Hallstatt day

Leave early. That is the single most important tip. Arrive around 9 am and you will have the village almost to yourself – from midday the lanes fill up.

Then the classics: the view from the Skywalk high above the village, the Salzwelten salt mines (Hallstatt owes its name and its history to salt), and a stroll along the lake. For lunch, head back towards Bad Goisern or on to the water – and the afternoon belongs to you, not to the traffic jam.

More trips from Bad Goisern

  • Bad Ischl (10 km): Kaiservilla, Kurpark, coffee house culture – the charming counterpart to postcard Hallstatt.
  • Lake Gosau: a mountain lake with a Dachstein backdrop, one of the most beautiful photo spots in the Salzkammergut.
  • St. Wolfgang (18 km): the Schafbergbahn cog railway and the White Horse Inn – kitschy and great at the same time.
  • In winter: four ski resorts (including Dachstein West) within 15–30 minutes by car.
